What are the health benefits of bone broth?
Earlier this month, we proudly unveiled a new product here at Unthank Farm; Beef Bone Broth.
Homemade, organic and produced from our grass-fed beef and local vegetables, our Beef Bone Broth is already proving to be popular with both new and existing customers here in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.
Often described as a ‘superfood’, bone broth can have many nutritional benefits - as well as being a flavoursome addition to cooking. As the popularity of organic, healthy produce continues to rise, bone broth has become a well-regarded produce in recent years.
But, just how healthy is it really? In this blog, we’ll be telling you 5 things that make bone broth so great for your health and nutritional benefit.
Improves joint health
Packed with nutrients such as protein, cholesterol, sodium, potassium and many more, bone broth studies have shown it to have potential joint benefits.
The process of cooking bone broth leads to the breakdown of collagen from the bones and connective tissue, which inturn produces a protein called gelatine. Whilst collagen is good for things like joint stiffness, pain and function, gelatin contains important amino acids that may be useful for injury prevention!
“A 2017 study found that supplementation with gelatine alongside vitamin C improved collagen synthesis post exercise and was able to repair tendons.”
May be anti-ageing
Another great benefit to bone broth; a natural anti-ageing remedy!
As we’ve discussed, bone broth contains great amounts of the protein ‘collagen’. This collagen is an important protein that the body naturally produces, but this production gradually decreases as we age.
Collagen supplements, therefore, have been studied, and in some cases proven, to improve/maintain our skin’s elasticity and structure as we age.
Good for your gut
The gelatine produced in bone broth has been suggested in animal studies to act as a therapy to those with inflammatory bowel disease.
This means that bone broth is a food that is not only easy to digest, but potentially a great food to promote good gut health.
Ideal for weight management
Low in calories but a great way to feed your hunger, bone broth proves to be an ideal snack or small meal.
As the broth is packed with protein, it may also support those following a high-protein diet in their weight loss / weight management journey.
Hydrating!
Made with water, bones, vegetables and various spices, bone broth is a very hydrating source of food (or drink!).
In fact, when bone broth uses vegetables, this adds additional nutrient and minerals such as electrolytes and carbohydrates. Studies on this have shown that this causes the broth to actually be more hydrating than water alone - thanks to those additional electrolytes.
